Why a Thrift Store?

Operating a shelter is costly, and grants do not cover all the necessary expenses. For example, in FY 07/08, Quigley House spent over $28,000 on utilities, nearly $16,000 on telephone expenses, $7,900 on transitional housing costs, $32,000 on insurance, $2,400 on security/fees and licenses, and almost $28,000 on maintenance/upkeep of our shelter facility! That is nearly $110,000 of critical expenses that are not covered by grants, and does not include vital expenditures such as salaries of advocacy staff, direct client assistance, office supplies, and administrative costs.
